'La Voz México' Contestant Gibrán Martiz Murdered

The 22-year-old Wisin y Yandel mentee had been kidnapped from his home in Veracruz.

Gibrán Martiz, a contestant on the recent third season of 'La Voz México,' was murdered over the weekend after being kidnapped from his home in Veracruz.

Police found the body of Martiz, 22, and a second victim on Saturday (Jan. 18) after a shootout with “deliquents,” officials revealed in a press conference on Sunday. Martiz’s family had reported that he and a friend had been taken from his apartment Jan. 7 by kidnappers dressed as police.

Martiz, a business student who bought his first guitar at age 15, had been singing professionally for about five years.

“I believe in your talent,” Yandel said on La Voz México, after Martiz sang “El Amor,” a hit for tropical star Tito El Bambino. Wisin y Yandel won out in a duel with rocker Alejandra Guzman to mentor the young performer.

“Our most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fans of Gibran,” Wisin y Yandel Tweeted after learning of his death. “May God keep you in his glory.”
