INFINITE's Jang Dong Woo Releases First Solo EP 'Bye'

Jang Dong Woo of K-pop boy band INFINITE released his first solo album Monday (March 4). Bye, a seven-track EP, comes nine years since the singer-rapper got his start in the boy band in 2010.

Bye is fronted by a set of dual singles, “News” and “Party Girl,” which display the artist’s varied style through a pair of music videos.

“News,” which is being promoted as the main track, is a moodier, slinky dance tune. It turns the focus onto Jang’s skill as a dancer during discordant synth dance breaks -- plus an artistic duet with a female dancer -- all the while serving up ample space for him to alternate between his sweet vocals and his impassioned rap, showing his full range as an artist.

Meanwhile, the second song is a full-blown, upbeat dance track that lives up to its title, serving up a bright EDM tune full of vibrancy as Jang sings about not needing that sort of "Party Girl." To counter the morose nature of the song, the music video is full of bright lights and dynamic choreography scenes where he is backed by dancers.

Jang's album comes ahead of his upcoming enlistment in South Korea's military to fulfill the country's mandatory draft. He is the fourth member of INFINITE to pursue a solo career. Members Kim Sung Kyu and Nam Woo Hyun have previously released solo albums amid the group’s career, while last year saw former member Hoya depart to pursue his own career as a soloist. In the past, Jang and Hoya formed INFINITE sub-team INFINITE-H, which emphasized the duo's hip-hop leanings as the then-seven-membered group's rappers.

INFINITE most recently returned with the single "Clock" last month.
