NELL, "Let's Part"

South Korean rock band Nell returned Wednesday (Nov. 14) with the release of their new album Let’s Part and a nostalgic music video for the single of the same name.

Known for their soft, haunting take on evocative electro and synth-rock, “Let’s Part” emphasizes the tender, reflective vocals of Kim Jong Wan with not much else other than gentle piano melodies and reverberating guitar riffs. Though it still maintains the group’s traditionally woozy, dreamlike style, “Let’s Part” offers up a simpler soundscape than some of their more recent singles, forgoing the ‘80s electro-pop vibes of last year’s “Today” with GroovyRoom and the twinkling synths of 2016’s playful “Dream Catcher.”

The gentle tone of the single was emphasized in the retro-slanted music video for "Let's Part," which takes the viewers back to the past, showing grainy, largely hand-filmed imagery of a relationship between a young couple in Japan. Throughout the clip, it shows the pair going from students to adulthood, and ends poignantly with the male looking back on videos from the past, as if preparing himself for the titular breakup.

“Let’s Part” is the title song off of Nell's first LP since 2016's C, and the band's second since setting up their own independent record label, Space Bohemian, in 2016. The group was recently featured on BTSRM’s mono. mixtape.
