VIXX "Scientist"

Never ones to shy away from conceptualized themes for their songs and albums, K-pop boy band VIXX returned on Tuesday ( April 17) with their perfume-inspired single “Scentist.”

Revolving around the scent of the one they love, VIXX’s latest is a a dark synth-pop tune overflowing with passion. Intense in its subtlety, “Scentist,” -- not to be misread as “Scientist” but instead a contraction of “Scent” and “Artist” -- puts forth a lush melody with a smooth, trap-inspired beat over which the six members sing and rap. The song’s a slow burn, and languishes in its smoothness before picking up with tinny percussion to lead into the groovy chorus.

The aromatic theme of “Scentist” is front and center in its music video. Dramatic reds, blues, greens, whites, and grays dominate the sets as the men act as perfumers mixing together scents and cocktails in a lab. Deathly shootouts, a murderous child, and sensuous choreography, which reflect the song's lyrics through wrist-sniffing and mirrored movements, draw the visually stunning elements together.

“Scentist” leads the sextet’s third LP, Eau De VIXX, the group’s first full-length album since 2015’s Chained Up. Like the single, perfumery and the individuality of VIXX’s style, imagined as a scent, are the inspiration for the album. Alternating between upbeat, pop and funk tracks and sultry dance songs, Eau De VIXX features several songs written by Ravi, Hyuk, Ken, and N.

After debuting in 2012, VIXX became known in the K-pop scene for their highly stylized, theatrical performances and songs. They’ve had several albums appear on the World Albums chart, most recently Shangri-La EP, which reached No. 4 in July 2017.
