The month began with Korean boy band Wanna One premiering “I.P.U (I Promise You),” and now they’ve followed up that pre-album release single with their 0+1=1 (I Promise You) EP, fronted by “Boomerang.”

A lively electro- and hip-hop-infused dance track, “Boomerang” is aggressive in its pounding, frenetic beats and wailing synths. With aggressive vocals and trap production leanings, the latest Wanna One song shifts the group away from the melodic EDM they’ve favored on their most recent singles, “I.P.U” and “Beautiful,” while relaying a story of wanting love to return, like the titular tool.

The accompanying music video is notably absent of a “Boomerang,” and instead has member Kang Daniel facing deathly arrows. Like the song itself, the clip similarly showcases an alternative side to Wanna One, featuring the members in a variety of black-and-gold outfits as they perform the stomping choreography. Those outfits are then contrasted with more casual looks, both for the later dance portions of the music video as well, as when the 11 men interact with a variety of settings, which alternate between haunting and playful imagery to relay different sides of the boy band.

“Boomerang” is one of the seven tracks on the 0+1=1 album, which also features “I.P.U” as well as an alternate, piano-based “Propose” version of the pre-release track. Other album standouts include the ambient EDM track “Gold” -- a reference to the group’s so-called golden age of 2018, their final year together after being formed as a temporary group through last year’s season if the Korean television show Produce 101 -- and the groovy synth track "Day By Day."

The return of “Boomerang” coincided with a livestream accident that resulted in both Wanna One and the band’s agency YMC Entertainment apologizing for going live without the members being aware, resulting in off-the-record statements being made public, and evoking controversy among the group's fans.

Put together through viewer's votes, Wanna One went on to dominate the charts immediately upon being formed last year; their first EP 1x1=1 (To Be One) debuted at No. 3 on the World Albums chart, while December's 1-1=0 (Nothing Without You) hit No. 12. The group has proven immensely popular on social media, and peaked at No. 4 on the Social 50 chart for the week of March 17.
