4Minute Re-Energize Their Sound & Style By Going 'Crazy' on New Single

After showing a softer side of themselves via the buzz single "Cold Rain," girl group 4Minute made their full-fleged return with "Crazy" -- the perfect word to describe the latest revamp of the quintet.

In the post-"Gangnam Style" era of K-pop, 4Minute has stayed with a quirky, hip-hop sound via 2013 hits "What's Your Name?," "Is It Poppin'?" along with last year's "Whatcha Doin' Today?" While enjoyable, the fierceness of early 4Minute (check out 2010's "Huh") that floored their earliest fanbase felt weaker. Perhaps nervous upon hitting the five-year mark -- once considered an expiration date for Korean pop acts -- the group managed to come back fiercer than ever.

"Crazy" opens with snappy trap beats -- reminiscent of HyunA's summer solo single "Red" -- with the K-pop starlet opening the track with a playful rap. But as if putting HyunA with her four band mates makes her four times as strong, "Crazy" feels like "Red" on steroids. Its production quickly adds siren-like synths, turbo-powered drums and throbbing basslines as Sohyun and Gayoon add their respective rap and vocal lines. We soon get the track's addictive and brilliant breakdown that mixes trumpeting synths with Middle Eastern-influenced flutes.

More 4Minute

The energy only grows after when Jiyoon delivers a rap to rival her incredible verse from "Whatcha Doin' Today?" after the breakdown.

The accompanying music video sticks as one of 4Minute's most striking with a strong, black-and-white theme showcasing the girls in atypical sportswear (somehow Nike sweatbands with parachute pants works here) and bucket hats boasting their names. The girls also serve nearly non-stop choreography with multiple line changes throughout that makes this one of K-pop's top dances to watch for on the live stage.

Plus, look out for 4Minute's soft-spoken leader Jihyun to rub her hands up and down two of her female dancers' bums. After the group gave multiple spankings to their dancers in their last video, it shouldn't be as shocking, but it remains deliciously badass.

Along with "Cold Rain," "Crazy" is one of two singles off 4Minute's new EP named after the latter track. The group spent the week ahead of its release teasing putting out teaser videos for each of song. Check out the teaser for standout "Tickle Tickle Tickle" below:
