4Minute's 'What's Your Name?' Comeback: Sexy Hip-Hop & Zombies

HyunA, Gayoon, Jiyoon, Jihyun and Sohyun return with a new single.

K-pop girl group 4Minute have made a comeback after a year of overseas promoting, solo ventures and sub-unit projects. New single "What's Your Name?" is a fierce piece of electronic hip-hop aligned with a colorful music video showcasing the girls looking like they’re truly having fun appearing more lighthearted than they have in years.

“What’s Your Name?” is a production by Brave Brothers--the producer responsible for recent bass-heavy tracks like Dazzling Red's "This Person," Teen Top's "Miss Right" and 4Minute member HyunA’s latest solo single “Ice Cream.”

Speaking of the “Gangnam Style” co-star, her signature rap-talk delivery worked well over the bumping beat for “Ice Cream.” 4Minute's new single is heavy on the rap and repetitive hooks (in comparison to the major diva belts on 2012 single “Volume Up”). The beats sound a little too similar at first until “What’s Your Name?” explodes into an arena-sized, clapping section near the 1:10 mark. The song soon takes another sharp turn as Jihyun leads a slowed-down, sensual break. The return to their hip-hop side is undoubtedly a treat for 4Minute fans, 4nia, as a reminder of what made them fall in love with the quintet in 2009.

The music video is another treat filled with colorful imagery as the group pops and locks in various video sets. The music breaks for 20 seconds as the girls are attacked by extras playing (unconvincing) zombies before everyone comes together to dance in a very “Thriller”-esque final chorus. All the while the girls laugh, smile and give sassy faces to the camera.

No one denies that HyunA is a major visual for 4Minute, but the sexiness is kicked up a notch in “What’s Your Name?” At the 1:40 mark, all the girls bend over and look over their shoulders, but HyunA is spotlighted: booty shorts and sheer mid-thigh tights are front and center. The other girls are styled in pants or longer skirts. The overemphasis of HyunA is clear, but understandable, as a major draw to viewers who will, ideally, buy the catchy single.

“What’s Your Name?” marks a fun return to electronic hip-hop for 4Minute. It’s a treat for longtime 4nias as well as K-pop fans fond of badass female groups like 2NE1.
