Ty Dolla $ign cemented himself as the ultimate collaborator putting forth an MVP campaign in the assist category for 2018, but the focus now shifts back to his anticipated forthcoming LP, Tyrone, which is slated to drop later in the year. Dolla $ign covers the latest issue of SPIN magazine on Tuesday (Aug. 6), where he pays homage to Kurt Cobain by recreating his epic Oct. 2001 cover story.

The California native actually has the Nirvana frontman tattooed on the back of his leg. "The first time I ever actually loved a rock song was 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and then it made me go and listen to all of his shit. I wish he would have lived longer to really give off everything and I wonder what he would sound like right now," he says. "I definitely wanted to pay homage to Kurt because he's the rock star of rock stars. I'm just a sex symbol, I'm trying to get there."

Dolla $ign cleared his mind going into crafting his upcoming album by temporarily putting smoking weed on hold for the time being. The 34-year-old wasn't focused on hitmaking, but a conversation with Kanye West really elevated the effort's potential.

"I had a meeting one time with Kanye, and played him the album, and he was like, 'Bro nah, you need to do what you do. Add more bass, add more drums, add more, the real shit, that’s what no one else is doing. Be the best you, bring that shit all the way up to the forefront.' That conversation definitely inspired me, and made me go back and go crazy with the live instruments," Ty explains.

With explosive collabs ranging from J. Cole to Fifth Harmony, the "Purple Emoji" artist can't be boxed into one genre. He says that sometimes the bond to work with another artist is formed outside of music with hobbies like shooting pool.

"Different people are into different things, but I’m into a lot of different shit. It’s cool when you get an artist that, you know, likes to shoot pool like me, and we can bet money for this shit. Let’s go down the list: A$AP Ferg, Young Thug, all them n----s, I took they money," he jokes They owe me money, matter of fact."

SPIN had Ty's "Psycho" collaborator Post Malone chime in on what he believes makes Dolla $ign so special and a jack of all trades. "He's not stuck in one genre or style," says Posty. "He likes everything. I'm like that, too. He can talk about everything from rap to alternative, all that shit."
