Black Music Innovators: H.E.R. Shares a Playlist Featuring Timeless Rap and R&B Classics

As part of Billboard’s Black Music Month celebration, we've asked Black artists spanning all genres to compile their own unique playlist exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. Each song they've chose reflects their admiration for fellow artists — from previous generations to the new millennial era — who have made an impact on the culture. Today, Grammy-winning R&B sensation H.E.R. shares her soundtrack.

"The artists that I chose to include in my playlist are, to me, artists that have set the tone for what it means to make CLASSIC records," H.E.R. tells Billboard about her curation. "From Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall and Prince's 1999, these are records we can feel and enjoy in any mood at any time.

"These records continue to inspire generations and young artists like myself. I couldn’t even fit every positive influence on Black music in one playlist! It would be days and days of music."

Last week, H.E.R. announced her inaugural Lights On Festival that will take place in Concord, Calif. on Sept. 14. The lineup includes Jhené Aiko, Summer Walker, Ari Lennox and "Best Part" collaborator Daniel Caesar. H.E.R. plans to grace the Staples Center stage for the seventh annual BET Experience at L.A. Live today (June 20), which will precede her performance at the 2019 BET Awards on June 23.
