Blood Orange performs on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Nov. 26, 2018.

Blood Orange moved The Tonight Show with the glossy ballad "Charcoal Baby" from his Negro Swan album on Monday night (Nov. 26). Playing an electric guitar in front of a deep blue background, the singer born Dev Hynes was surrounded by an entourage of musicians and performers on the low-lit stage. A man with angel wings sat cross-legged on his left while a woman dressed in white bopped to the beat on his right, while the band added some contrast by wearing all-black.

“When you wake up,” sizzled the 32-year-old musician in a relaxed voice on the lithe, Prince-like meditation. “It's not the first thing that you wanna know/ Can you still count/ All of the reasons that you're not alone?”

Cool harmonies and synth-like sounds creeped in on the chorus as the background turned pink: "No one wants to be the odd one out at times/ No one wants to be the negro swan/ Can you break sometimes?” The bridge highlighted new sounds, with one musician cycling through a flute and saxophone while the keyboardist flooded the background with jazzy, cascading notes.
