Lil Wayne Talks the 'Business' Behind 'Tha Carter V,' Performs 'Dedicate' on 'Fallon': Watch
Lil Wayne’s hugely-anticipated album Tha Carter V finally dropped last Friday -- four years later than expected -- and it’s currently charging towards the summit of the Billboard 200. The rapper gave it a push along with an appearance overnight on The Tonight Show, where he donned a fanny pack and performed album track “Dedicate” with The Roots and sat for a chat with host Jimmy Fallon.
In his Q&A with Fallon, Weezy discussed the LP’s long gestation, the “business” that delayed its release ("everything blew up, we just needed the debris to clear"), skating, parenting and his commando approach to making music. Wayne doesn’t write-down lyrics. “I just go in (the studio) and how I’m feeling that day is how it goes.”
And how does he remember those lines when it comes time to hit them on, say, late-night TV? “Your guys are so so kind, so generous,” he told Fallon. “They typed up my lyrics for me, and so I’m back there studying them right now.” Cue an entire audience (and host) roaring with laughter.
Wayne backed up with a performance of “Dedicate,” with no cheat-sheets in sight.
Tha Carter V is poised for a big launch atop the albums chart and has a chance to reach a half-million units in its first week. Should it get there, Tha Carter V will become the rapper's fourth No. 1 on the survey after Tha Carter IV (2011), I Am Not a Human Being (2010) and Tha Carter III (2008).
