Former VP of Rostrum Records Arthur Pitt Remembers Mac Miller: 'His Heart Was Full of Love'
The untimely passing of Mac Miller on Friday afternoon (Sept. 7) rocked the music industry in more ways than one. Artists such as Post Malone, J. Cole, G-Eazy and more sent out their heartfelt condolences to the Pittsburgh MC through tweets and musical tributes. Dead at 26, the eclectic lyricist reportedly suffered from an overdose at his home in California's San Fernando Valley.
Before Miller bloomed into a formidable act in the rap world, he first began his legacy at Rostrum Records under the tutelage of founder Benjy Grinberg and then-vice president Arthur Pitt. Devastated by Miller’s demise, Pitt ruminated on his fondest memory of his former signee in an e-mail to Billboard.
“We had a celebratory dinner in LA for Mac the night Blue Slide Park came out,” recalls Pitt. “Around midnight, I stood behind him and we watched it hit No. 1 on iTunes. He really shifted the business having that much success independently. I was so damn proud of him and he was smiling from ear to ear at that moment. He was truly proud of himself and rightfully so.”
Miller’s debut album, Blue Slide Park, dashed to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 in 2011 and allowed him to reach the apex of music before the age of 21. Aside from Miller’s splashy impact in music, his affability is what lured his peers into his life, says Pitt.
"He will be remembered as a musical pioneer," he continued. "A true superstar who influenced a generation. He was never afraid to share the spotlight or give another artist their proper due. His heart was full of love and he put his family and friends first. As you can see, the amount of peer respect he has already gotten in his passing shows you how much the love he gave was returned."
