Big Sean's Colin Kaepernick Shout-Out on 'Big Bank' Censored for 'Madden 19'; Sean & EA Respond
UPDATE: Big Sean has responded to the reportedly dropped lyric, saying his team did not approve the change. "It’s disappointing and appalling @NFL & @EA took @Kaepernick7’s name out of my verse on Big Bank for Madden 19, like it was a curse word," Sean tweeted on Thursday (August 2). "When he's not a curse, he's a gift! Nobody from my team approved any of this." See Sean's tweet below.
UPDATE 2: EA Sports called the dropped lyric an "unfortunate mistake" in a statement to ESPN. "We made an unfortunate mistake with our Madden NFL soundtrack," the statement reads, according to a tweet from Darren Rovell. "Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don't have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn't affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake."
With Madden 19 being set for release on August 10, a few lucky individuals have been given early access to the annual NFL video game. One player noticed a subtle change to Big Sean's guest verse on YG's "Big Bank" for the game's soundtrack. When the Detroit native goes to name-drop Colin Kaepernick, Madden 19's version seems to skip over his shout-out to the embattled former NFL quarterback.
"Feed me to the wolves, now I lead the pack and shit/ You boys all cap, I'm more Colin Kaepernick/ I'm rare as affordable health care," Sean Don rhymes on the track's original studio edition. ProFootballTalk confirmed that the line had been scrubbed from an advanced copy of the EA Sports game.
Colin Kaepernick was the first and most prominent player to take a knee during the pre-game national anthem back in 2016, leading to more NFL players choosing to protest in the same manner. Kaepernick hasn't appeared in an NFL game since Jan. 1, 2017. Last year, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback filed a grievance against the NFL owners for colluding to keep him unsigned and out of the league.
Billboard has reached out to EA Sports for comment. Check out the Madden 19 version skipping over Colin Kaepernick's name drop from Big Sean below.
. @EAMaddenNFL who told you to edit Colin’s name out of @YG ‘s song Big Bank from Madden 19’ was it from the @nfl ? Also, thank you to people sending more info, because I just found out Madden also scrubbed Colin’s name out from Madden 18’ on the song “Bars of Soap” by Mike WiLL Made it ft Swae Lee. Thank you @Yg for letting them what’s up! (Scroll in the gallery) Colin trains every single day and the @NFL has decided to blackball him because he peacefully protests against systemic oppression, specifically police brutality, which we all know is a disgusting epidemic in our country. The NFL told you how they feel about social justice and clearly have no respect for humanity. End of story. They could have done the right thing but didn’t. Either they told EA Sports to censor his name from Madden or it was a EA Sports decision. Either way, why? Colin Kaepernick is a hero. And if you think otherwise, history will permanently keep you on the wrong side of history.

JUST IN: EA Sports says it didn’t mean to omit Colin Kaepernick’s name in YG’s song it licensed for use in Madden ‘19. Will add his name back in update. pic.twitter.com/ck8UhxI1fu— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) August 3, 2018
