Rakim performs on NPR's Tiny Desk series

The June 22 release of the single “King’s Paradise” ends Rakim’s decade long hiatus from music, and the hip-hop star grooved out to both his new song and classics in the latest installment of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series, uploaded this morning (June 25).

One half of the influential hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, he performed three songs backed by an amazing group of jazz musicians and Ali Shaheed of A Tribe Called Quest on the bass.

Rakim kicked things off with “King’s Paradise” to show listeners that even after almost 20 years since the release of his last song, he’s still got it. The track was written to pay homage to heroes of the Harlem Renaissance, referencing icons like Malcom X and Louis Armstrong.

The new single was followed by two Eric B. & Rakim classics, “Paid in Full” and “Know the Ledge,” both proving to be timeless hip-hop tracks, even almost 30 years after their 1987 and 1992 release dates.
