J. Cole Gives 'FRIENDS' A Surreal Spin In His 2018 BET Awards Performance

J. Cole kicked off the 2018 BET Awards with a profound performance -- and a small taste of the album that put him in the running for one of the biggest awards of the night.

The intro and first track on his fifth No. 1 album, KOD, ruminates on the crazy world were living in and how overwhelming it can be, and the rapper worked that theme into his stage set-up with a man sat watching the television, deeply absorbed in thought before lights came up on J. Cole at the mic.

Those jazzy bars segued into "FRIENDS," and a crew of white-clad dancers came out to move with Cole's flow. The heavy track starts a dialogue for unpacking addiction and how complicated dependency on drugs can be, especially in this current chaos. Cole lists off numerous reasons to stress that while underlining his intent: "Without the drugs I want you be comfortable in your skin."

J. Cole is nominated in the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist category, which also boasts Drake, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled and JAY-Z as nominees.
