Eric Johnson

After teasing a slew of mini-trailers on his socials, Maxwell returned on Tuesday (June 12) with his latest single, "We Never Saw It Coming," in which he mourns the abrupt demise of his strained relationship.

Maxwell's warm, gravelly vocals are feathered onto the stripped-down, brooding ballad, led by a somber piano melody and atmospheric synths. "I am here, falling in circles far/Sorrowfully I fall/We never knew at all," he croons. "We never saw it coming/Like a truck that's passing/A gun that's blasting/I feel the lashing."

The singer's newest song is accompanied by a short film titled The Glass House, released exclusively on TIDAL In the visual, Maxwell is seemingly heartbroken, as he stands in front of his glass window gazing outside, soaking up the view of the city.

Maxwell's "We Never Saw It Coming" comes two years after the singer unveiled his fourth studio album blackSUMMERS'night in 2016.
