Big Sean Plans to Build a Movie Theater in Detroit by 2020
Big Sean is giving back to his hometown of Detroit in a major way. On Wednesday, Big Sean hosted a press event where he announced plans to build a luxury movie theater in the city.
The aptly titled Sean Anderson Theatre is part of the rapper's joint business venture with movie theater company Emagine Entertainment. If all goes well, the entertainment space is expected to open to the public in 2020 and will host 10 to 12 movie screens, equipped with up to 1,300 seats. The theater will also be used as a venue for live concerts, comedy shows and other events.
"We want to do something revolutionary with it," Big Sean said during the press event. "We don't want to just make it a movie theater, traditionally. We also want it to be a hub for entertainment for the whole community. We want people to have an incentive to go the extra miles, to travel into Detroit."
While an exact location for the multiplex hasn't been set yet, Big Sean said he plans to build the venue to be right in the heart of Detroit. Paul Glanz, owner of Emagine Entertainment, added that Big Sean "rightfully" deserved to have the theater named after himself because of his "big heart" and willingness to give back to his community.
Big Sean philanthropic efforts are nothing new. Last Sean and his mother, Myra Anderson, launched the educational program Mogul Prep designed to educate students about the music industry beyond just singing and rapping and explore all the other job opportunities offered in the industry.
"All I wanted to be was a musician, but if I had known these kind of things, who would have known the possibilities for me and my crew around me, and what we could have done to take it further?" he told Billboard. "I know the unemployment rates are super high in Detroit, especially for the young ones. We're trying to really help that out and give them clear career paths that are needed, and that they probably have natural talents for."
