Kris Wu Drops Fashion-Forward Music Video for Latest Single, 'B.M.'

Kris Wu is back with a music video for his latest single, “B.M,” after the track hit No. 2 on the iTunes US Chart.

His solo career has completely shed the idol trappings of his former K-pop group, EXO. On “B.M.,” his relaxed flow complements the moody beat. The hip-hop track is full of current sonic flourishes like Auto-Tune and triple hi-hats, while the beat is accented by piano. The music video, directed by Yu Cong, incorporates a vaporwave aesthetic with the appearance of digitized Classical statues.

He differs from most Chinese former idols who’ve gone solo by making a name for himself in America.

“I’ve been always trying to think about how I can bridge the East and the West,” the Canadian-Chinese artist said in an interview with Genius. “If kids back home, they see me doing this, hopefully that encourages them too.”

His entry into the English-speaking market has been effective so far. He was the first Chinese artist to land at the top of the iTunes chart, with “Deserve,” featuring Travis Scott.

"B.M." stands for “Burberry made” -- a nod to Wu’s collaboration with the high-end retail brand for a Winter ‘17 collection that will launch on Dec. 16. He became the first non-British global ambassador of the British fashion house last year, which boosted demand for the brand across Asia, according to The Telegraph.

Although the song is branded, it doesn’t feel out of place or even inauthentic in a hip-hop world that uplifts designer brands as a cornerstone of braggadocio. After all, “Gucci” has become a multipurpose adjective that generally means “good.”
