PnB Rock Talks New Mixtape 'Catch These Vibes,' Working With Lil Yachty & Wiz Khalifa
2017 was a busy year for the Philadelphia native PnB Rock. The year started with his infectious collaboration on YFN Lucci’s “Everyday We Lit” and his breakout mixtape GTTM: Going Thru The Motions catapulting the artist to a new level.
His mixtape spawned three singles in “Selfish," “Playa No More" and “New Day.” “Selfish” charted at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his first Platinum-certified single. Since then, PnB has been on a tear, adding more and more buzz to his growing popularity.
The soulful crooner found himself on two tracks off The Fate of the Furious soundtrack, and he built an impressive resume working with some of the hottest artists in hip-hop today. In June, PnB Rock earned a coveted spot on XXL’s Freshman Class list and soon after that he teased his project, Catch These Vibes.
The project, which stands at 18 tracks long, is exactly what the title entails—a body of work that throws nothing but vibes at the listener. It features guest appearances by A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Russ, Lil Yachty, Wiz Khalifa and more. The three singles supporting the project, “Scrub”, “Feelins”, and “Issues” has added more interest and buzz to what’s being considered his official debut album.
PnB Rock sat with Billboard and broke down the origin of “iRun” with Lil Yachty, “TTM” featuring Wiz Khalifa and his Juicy J-assisted “Confide.”
“iRun” (feat. Lil Yachty)
So “iRun” is just a fun turn-up song, me and Yachty. We were both in New York one time. That's my guy. We did a few songs together, so when I saw he was out in New York I hit him up on some regular shit, like, “Wassup bro, come to the studio, pull up.” He pulled up and we were just cooking.
We made three songs that night and “iRun” was one of my favorites. We ended up putting it on the tape. He's going to put one of the other songs on the tape that he coming out with, and we got another song with [Ski Mask the] Slump God, and I think he’s going do something with that song.
“TTM” (feat. Wiz Khalifa)
Well, “TTM” started off being a feature. A producer wanted me to just hop on the beat, like a Diplo type of thing. When I recorded the song I liked it a lot, and I figured, instead of them paying me to do this, I'd rather just use this for my project and we can just get money together. That's what it wound up being.
I then felt like it could go to a higher level, so I reached out to one of my friends, Wiz. I sent it over to him to see what he thought about it. He sent it back the next day and that shit was done. He fucked with it OD.
“Confide” (feat. Juicy J)
I like ”Confide” a lot. It was just like a great vibe for me. I was in the studio in Atlanta, and I recorded it and thought, "This is definitely going on my album." At the time, I was planning on making an album, but the shit ended up being a mixtape. When I was recording it, it was definitely going on there. But I just needed a big feature on here. I was asking all my friends and one of them said Juicy J. So I was listening and thought, "No funny shit, Juicy J would sound fire on this." I just reached out.
I told him, "I'm in LA. If you in LA, I got some shit I think you would fuck with," and he said “Pull up, I'm in the studio right now.” I pulled up on him, he had the liquor, the weed and we was just in there vibing. He was teaching me dope shit about the game. I fuck with Juicy J.
