"One thing you taught us is how to stand strong in the face of adversity."

R. Kelly shared a photo of him and Nelson Mandela via Twitter on Tuesday (July 18), wishing the late South African civil rights leader a happy birthday and invoking his guidance in a surely trying time.

"One thing you taught us is how to stand strong in the face of adversity," Kelly's tweet said.

On Monday, an investigative report published by Buzzfeed alleged the singer was running a sex "cult," where according to sources he has been housing half a dozen young women in properties in Chicago and Atlanta. According to the piece, Kelly controls all aspects of the women's lives, including what they eat, how they dress, when they sleep and how they "engage in sexual encounters that he records." The story was written by longtime Chicago music journalist Jim DeRogatis.
