21 Savage Stars as Animated Super Villain in 'The Year 2100'
Breakout rapper 21 Savage adds another dimension to his rising career as the star of the animated series The Year 2100. The first of six one-minute episodes premieres on series creator WeBuyGold’s Instagram page today. However, Billboard viewers can access the first episode below.
21 Savage voices himself in The Year 2100, in which he appears as an animated super villain who controls the world with his music. His evil sidekick and advisor is an Alexa-like device named Tootie. The feature was inspired by an image taken from the rapper/songwriter’s guest stint on ESPN’s Highly Questionable. The image, which zeroed in on 21 Savage’s signature sly smile, wild hair and hand gestures, sparked a viral meme that characterized him as a comic book super villain.
Sporting a futuristic storyline built around the rapper’s need to record new music in order to retain his powers, the short-form series is illustrated by artist and animator Somehoodlum, whose drawings and videos have featured Drake, Migos and Kendrick Lamar.
Its writers are Richie Carl and Ian McLees. New episodes will premiere weekly on WeBuyGold’s Instagram feed, and will also be distributed on Facebook and YouTube. Bonus content including behind-the-scenes video with Savage, photos and character descriptions will also be available.
“I’m excited to bring this cartoon villain to life and for my fans to see a new side of me,” said 21 Savage in a release announcing the series. Added Dan Altmann, co-founder of WeBuyGold, “This series showcases 21 Savage’s talent and music in a new way. He was the perfect person to develop this creative story around." United Talent Agency (UTA) brokered the deal on behalf of 21 Savage and WeBuyGold.
Artist and social media maven DJ Khaled serves as creative director for WeBuyGold (WeBuyGold). The Year 2100 is the first of several original animated series that the social-video network will be launching with Khaled, dance duo Ayo + Teo and other popular artists.
