Tish Hyman, whose writing credits include Alicia Keys’ “Blended Family” (featuring A$AP Rocky), shifts back into artist mode for her next project. “What It Feels Like,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Dej Loaf -- the first single from her sophomore EP The Way I Am -- dropped today (April 7).

On the catchy hook in the light-hearted track, Hyman references various intriguing life experiences -- like traveling to Dubai -- that she has been privileged to enjoy. “The song is about what life is like for me in terms of expanding my palette,” the singer/rapper tells Billboard. “I want people to dance and feel inspired once they hear it … to celebrate all that life has to offer and all the things they can go out and get.”

Listen to “What It Feels Like”:

“What It Feels Like” is just one of the several up-tempo, bass-heavy tracks featured on Hyman’s The Way I Am EP due this summer from Empire. It’s the follow-up to the Bronx, New York native’s 2016 EP Dedicated To, which has amassed more than 4.8 million Spotify streams. Drawing comparisons to Lauryn Hill, the critically acclaimed set featured the buzz-building singles “Subway Art” and “Dreams,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Fabolous.

“It’s basically the next chapter in my life,” says Hyman of her forthcoming EP. “Dedicated To reflected the beginning of my life and how my career came to be. The Way I Am is me now, loving my life and what I do.”

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2010, Hyman has racked up a growing list of songwriting and guest credits. These include frequent collaborator Ty Dolla $ign (“Horses in a Stable”), Fabolous (“You Made Me” featuring Tish Hyman), Diddy (“Everyday Amor” featuring Pusha T, Tish Hyman, Jadakiss & Styles P) and Dom Kennedy (“2 Bad” also featuring Hyman). In the last two years, Hyman has toured with Jill Scott, BJ the Chicago Kid and Lil Wayne, performed at the Essence Festival and The Roots Picnic and made her acting debut in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq as the character Big Thelma.

Hyman will perform “What It Feels Like” and other selections at the Peppermint Club in Los Angeles tonight (April 7), in what she promises will be a killer show. “I’m very particular about the sound of my music,” she says with a laugh. “So I’ll be sitting there like a general making sure every note is perfect. It’s my first big show in L.A. where I’ll be performing songs from the EP, so I want to give 150 percent.”

Her upcoming performances include ATL Live On The Park in Atlanta on May 9, Liberty Game halftime performance in New York City on May 13, the Long Beach Pride Festival in Long Beach, Calif. on May 20, and the Spirit Festival in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 6.
