Common Latest to Defend Snoop Dogg's Trump-Baiting 'Lavender' Vid, While All Tha Doggfather Can Do is Smile

Common is the latest MC to come to the defense of Snoop Dogg in the wake of the controversy over Snoop's Donald Trump-baiting "Lavender" video. Snoop also took to Instagram on Wednesday (March 15) to say he had nothing to say about the flap, offering just a satisfied smile.

The controversy over the collabo with BADBADNOTGOOD in which the president is depicted in greasepaint makeup and subject to a mock clowny execution with one of those "BOOM!" toy guns has inspired ire from Trump and some other Republicans and support from many of Tha Doggfather's peers.

"Hip-hop always been about freedom of expression, that's one of the most powerful things," rapper Common told TMZ on Wednesday (March 15). "Hip-hop has been like a voice for so many people... If you go think about the days of Public Enemy and you fast-forward to Kendrick Lamar, hip-hop artists have always been speaking up and saying what they feel... if it's a president they don't like, if it's a politician they don't like... if you didn't like what was going on you speak up and we're entitled to do that as people."

The video rankled Trump, who fired off a tweet to "failing" Snoop questioning what kind of jail time he might have done if he'd "aimed and fired the gun at President Obama?" While Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and Trump's personal attorney have come to the tweeter-in-chief's defense, fellow rappers Ice-T and Naughty by Nature's Treach also had D-O-G-G's back.

Snoop has kept it pretty quiet in the midst of the drama, but on Wednesday he did offer an Instagram update on the flap. "They all want to ask me questions and interview me but guess what?," he said. "I've got nothing to say mate," he added in an Australian accent, ending the short clip with a satisfied grin.
