10 Best Stoner Movie Soundtracks: From 'Friday' to 'Easy Rider' & Beyond
A great stoner movie not only pays homage to the marijuana it gains inspiration from, but it becomes a staple of the very culture itself. (If you can’t get high to it, then is it really a stoner movie at all?)
Another aspect of a great stoner flick, in addition to quotable dialogue (“This weed was the shiz-nittle-bam snip-snap-sack!”) and 4/20-friendly stars (cough cough, Seth Rogen), is the soundtrack.
An essential stoner movie track listing should set the mood for a toke session on, or off, screen. These are 10 that accomplish just that. Who said stoners don’t get anything done?
Dazed and Confused
The Dazed and Confused soundtrack may get older with each passing year, but the greatness of it stays the same. What would have made for a great soundtrack for any stoner in 1976 still works in 2017. That’s because of gold standards like Foghat’s “Slow Ride” and War’s “Low Rider,” the latter of which is also prominent on the Up In Smoke soundtrack.
Up In Smoke
If you don’t have this in your collection, what kind of stoner are you? The title track is all but the weed smoker’s unofficial anthem.
Leading man Ice Cube has the classic flick’s title track on the Billboard 200-topping 1995 soundtrack, and he’s in damn good company. The decades-spanning compilation goes from The Isley Brothers and Bootsy Collins right up to Cypress Hill and 2 Live Crew. Of course, the soundtrack all but belongs to Dr. Dre, thanks to his hit “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.”
An essential album in its own right, the deluxe edition of the Easy Rider soundtrack features the staples from the late '60s (including Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” and Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9”), as well as the necessary additions of The Band’s “The Weight” and Joe Cocker’s “A Little Help From My Friends,” among others. An absolute must-have album, whether you’re a biker, a smoker, both, or neither.
The Big Lebowski
Let’s face it: you can’t in good conscience roll up to Lebowski Fest without having listened to this inspired compilation which features artists from Nina Simone to Bob Dylan to the Gipsy Kings. But, that’s just, like, our opinion, man.
Any stoner movie worth its salt has lines that become part of the lexicon (see: Up In Smoke), and Clerks is no exception. It makes sense that the soundtrack is peppered with snippets from the 1994 indie hall of famer, as well as music from Alice in Chains, Bad Religion, and Love Among Freaks.
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
The adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo, drug-fueled journey is a trip, to say the least, and so is the soundtrack. When you’re listening to a compilation that combines Tom Jones, Debbie Reynolds, Jefferson Airplane, and the Dead Kennedys, it’s pretty safe to say you’re not in bat country anymore.
If you liked 90 minutes of Method Man and Redman appreciating Mary Jane, then the soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment. With 20 tracks, including songs from the movie’s stars, as well as skits, it’s as much a time capsule of 2001 as it is an all-around solid hip-hop album.
Tenacious D In the Pick of Destiny
If you get stoned with someone who happens to have an acoustic guitar, you can be damn sure they’re going to sing at least one song off Pick of Destiny. And, you know what, it’s awfully fun to sing “Kickapoo” at the top of your lungs with no judgment whatsoever.
This Is The End
Best use of a non-stoner song in a stoner movie ever.
