For the truly enlightened sneakerhead, style is the ultimate consideration -- but arch support might be a close second. “I’ve always loved New Balance. It’s always been a comfortable shoe to me,” said Jadakiss, co-host (along with Fabolous) of a dinner celebrating the release of the 247 Luxe, a sleek leather and stretch synthetic model launching Saturday (Jan. 7). “New Balance is one of the most comfortable shoes you can wear. They’re good for your feet. We’re on our feet a lot of hours of the day.”

The dinner, an intimate, four-course sit-down, was part of an ambitious global rollout for the 247 for which the pair will perform during a private concert at Foot Locker in New York’s Herald Square. The party, held at a Midtown loft space and attended by friends, fellow sneaker gurus and label mates -- like recent Def Jam signee Dave East -- also served to tout their much awaited joint mixtape, Freddy vs. Jason. The project is inspired by the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and rubber masks and replicas of the films’ machetes and bladed gloves decorated the space, owing to the horror theme. Fabolous and Jadakiss discussed the upcoming release over a dinner of cauliflower soup, sea bass and chicken roulade.

There’s no announced release date for the mixtape, though something is expected to drop this week to coincide with Friday the 13th, but the caginess is strategic. “What we try to do, what I felt like was lost now, is build a little energy before the project comes out. Build that anticipation and people want to see what comes of it,” Fabolous said. The genesis of the project came from a period when Fabolous was releasing a series of Friday night freestyles with DJ Clue while Jadakiss was doing his own Friday morning freestyles with DJ Envy. Collaborating seemed like the natural next step, and their love of horror movies (and the fact that Jadakiss’ first name is Jason) inspired the theme.

As the dessert course was served, Jadakiss and Fabolous were presented with their own 247s customized by Mache, the acclaimed sneaker artist, with color schemes corresponding to Freddy and Jason. “It’s a funny theme of Freddy vs. Jason, too, because if you’ve ever watched the movies, Jason don’t really talk,” said Fabolous, noting Jadakiss’s relative reserve. “And Freddy’s more witty, but both of them have their impact. They’re both villains, they’re both strong at what they do."
