Rapsody -- the North Carolina-based rapper who has performed alongside Aretha Franklin at the White House in honor of the late Prince and was nominated for a Grammy for her work on Kendrick Lamar’s No. 1 on Billboard 200 album To Pimp a Butterfly -- just released the new mixtape Crown. The 10-track tape features collaborations with guests artists like Ab-Soul, Anderson .Paak and Moonchild.
The opening song features an empowering monologue about pride, resilience and hope that sets the tone for the rest of her bold tracks. Rapsody brings the listener into personal struggles throughout her lifetime, sampling sounds from Beyoncé’s vocals to Public Enemy’s “Rebel Without a Pause.” The last track, “Fire” featuring Moonchild, offers solace and inspiration to keep pushing forward, no matter how discouraging the political and social atmosphere may be these days.
