Derek Minor Debuts Soulful 'Until I'm Gone' Video Feat. BJ The Chicago Kid: Premiere
Motivational rhymer Derek Minor keeps the faith in his new video for "Until I'm Gone" featuring BJ The Chicago Kid, premiering exclusively on Billboard. "I came up from the bottom/And I ain't even supposed to be here if it was up to y'all," the Nashville rep raps on the soulful track. "And I think God had different plans for me."
Rolling through the streets of New York and Tennessee, Minor spotlights the South that raised him as well as the places that his success has taken him. The Will Thomas-directed clip also features footage of a young Minor rapping in the church.
"With the video, I wanted to contrast two experiences -- where I've grown up and where I've been," he tells Billboard. "I grew up in the South but music has taken me across the world. The whole idea is regardless of where I go, I'll never forget where I came from. I'll never forget what prompted me to create music and that's to tell my story and connect with people at the heart level."
Minor also says that collaborating with the Chicago singer was a match made in harmony. "BJ is obviously an extremely talented artist," he said. "When you look at his body of work, it speaks for itself. What I enjoyed the most about working with him is his realness. He's not just an "industry dude," he's a real artist and has been building something special with his team. That's the energy I wanted on the song and he brought it."
After releasing 2015's Empire and 2013's Minorville, Minor is sure to offer more major keys in his forthcoming studio effort Reflection, which lands Oct. 14 via Reflection Music Group/eOne Music and is available for pre-order here.
