M.I.A. Criticizes MTV VMAs For Shutting Out 'Borders'
Like Nick Jonas, the 2016 MTV Video Music Award nominations have M.I.A. feeling some type of way. The Sri-Lankan MC took to Twitter to call out the VMAs for omitting her song "Borders" from the nods list.
"MIA - BORDERS is not included in the VMAs#hahahahhaahahhaha!! Racism sexism classism elitism#dontwantyourlane!," she wrote. "BORDERS came representing people outside US showing [--] . This is a perfect example of "allowed" voice vs excluded voices .Even if U direct it."

"not here 4 EGO or Accolades but know before you tell other [--] artists they have the same platform as major US artists coz they don't # [--]," she continued.
M.I.A.'s previous releases include the politically charged "Borders" as well as the Skrillex collaboration "Go Off." Because of her unfiltered opinions about Syrian refugees, the "Paper Planes" hitmaker was dropped from this month's Afropunk London music festival. She also caught some heat for comments regarding Black Lives Matter in an April 2016 interview with ES magazine, which she eventually clarified, saying, "My question was, on American platforms what do they allow you to stand up for in 2016."
Her forthcoming album, A.I.M. (due Sept. 9) is expected to be her final release. "Yeah, I think [this is my last record]," she said on BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac show earlier this month. "I want to go and do some other stuff, take some time out. I'm sure I'll make music but as an album, it kind of just came together."
