Meet Lion Babe, the Soul and R&B Duo Poised to Take Over in 2015
Tell me the story behind “Jusfayu.”
“Jusfayu” is a sum of experiences that I've had and still have. In the process of self appreciate and cultivation, sometimes I fall short in habits of seeking that externally in others [and] in romance. I felt that many of us can relate to that, to the state of searching for what we see as external presences to fill [and] what we consider internal absences.
How was it working with Lion Babe on the “Jusfayu” remix?
My management/family connected us. It did, however, feel very natural and working with them flowed quite organically and smoothly. Lion Babe, No Wyld, and I sat down and "Wallah," a remix was born!
How does love connect with how you create music?
Loving is creating. Or, in the words of Kahlil Gibran, "Work is love made visible". To me, to love is to commit the decision of an inevitable work and cultivation towards something. Or to let the Creator do what it do. I can't separate the two -- [life and God] are the same thing manifesting itself in different spaces.
Why explore different musical palates and what keeps you motivated to do so?
That's a reflection of my family! My family's house has extremely wide and diverse interests in music. I get that quality from these beautiful folk.
What’s the thread that ties all of the songs on A Gorgeous Fortune?
Presence is a gorgeous fortune. All of the songs deal with states of self and presence in relation to the awareness and appreciation of it. Whether it be through love, jealousy, the cultivation or degradation of it, and so on and so forth. They all approach it from the perspective of a fool, like myself, who hasn't learned to fully appreciate and respect it yet. It's OK though. We're getting there.
