Nelly Returns With New Single & Label: R&B/Hip-Hop Briefs

Nelly returns to radio Thursday (Aug. 6) with new single “The Fix,” featuring Jeremih. The song is produced by DJ Mustard and Mike Free and features a nod to the 1982 Marvin Gaye gem “Sexual Healing.”

“The Fix” also marks the Grammy-winning rapper’s first release via independent label Records -- Matt Pincus and Ron Perry of SONGS Music Publishing’s venture with industry veteran Barry Weiss. The new song will be available for download and streaming across all digital service providers on Aug. 14. Nelly last hit the charts in 2013 as a guest on Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.” That version of the song climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

-Urban radio icon Donnie Simpson ends his retirement after five years for a multi-year deal with Radio One and its cable network TV One. Simpson will helm afternoons (3 p.m.-7 p.m.) on urban AC WMMJ (aka Majic 102.3 FM) in Washington, D.C., beginning Aug. 17. In addition, Donnie Simpson Productions will collaborate with TV One to create various programs with Simpson returning to the small screen as early as fourth quarter of this year. Simpson is a D.C. radio fixture whose resumé includes gigs as an on-air personality at WRC-FM, now WKYS, and a 17-year morning run on neighboring WPGC-FM. On the TV front, he became well-known for his role as host of early BET mainstay Video Soul.

-R&B singer/songwriter James Hunter has signed with Daptone Records. His first project for the label is slated for release in early 2016. On Sept. 7, Daptone will issue a 45 single from Hunter’s last album, 2013’s Minute By Minute: “If I Only Knew” b/w “Heartbreak.”
