Chris Young Releases Poignant Tribute to Late Friend with 'Drowning': Listen
Chris Young has penned a touching song for his late friend, Adam, who died several years ago. The country singer’s new ballad “Drowning” has Young reflecting on how his friend was taken too soon. “I know it’s a part of life/ But I wasn’t ready to say goodbye,” Young’s booming baritone laments on the confessional track alongside delicate piano, guitar and string accompaniment.
“When I wrote this song with Corey Crowder and Josh Hoge, we each thought of someone that we lost way too soon,” Young shared on Instagram. “For me, it was one of my best friends, Adam. Missing you comes in waves and tonight I'm drowning. This one is for you, brother.”
“Drowning” marks a return to Young’s traditional sound with his deep vocals at the forefront of the poignant track. The song will be featured on his forthcoming album, Raised On Country, due out later this year.
“So tonight I’m gonna pull out pictures, ones with you in 'em/ Laugh and cry a little while reminiscing/ By myself, I can’t help that all I think about is/ How you were taken way too soon/ It ain’t the same here without you/ I gotta say, missing you comes in waves/ And tonight I’m drowning,” he sings.
Ahead of the track’s release, Young performed “Drowning” during his appearance at the Grand Ole Opry last week and broke down mid-song. “Since then so many people have shared stories of loved ones lost and how they have connected to this song. I want you guys to have this one, and make it your own, so I’m going to release it this Friday,” he wrote.
