Maren Morris & Ryan Hurd Talk New Music, Being 'More Fearless' & 'Sweet Spitfire' Dolly Parton: Watch
Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd caught up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala on Friday (Feb. 8), chatting about how this past year has made Morris more fearless, the possibility of a duets album and why they love Dolly Parton.
Reflecting on the last 12 months, Morris tells Briggs that having worked with Zedd and Grey -- and now capping off the year with five Grammy nominations -- she considers herself to be more fearless when it comes to production and her live shows. She adds that she can now embrace the fact that she doesn’t have to be just one thing.
Morris also shares that she would love to collaborate with Zedd again, if asked. “Any time Zedd calls me up to do another song, I'm game,” she says of her "The Middle" collaborator. “It worked out the first time so well. Clearly, we have some sort of chemistry there brewing. Sarah Aarons, who wrote the song, she and I wrote several songs for my new record, so it's brought a lot of amazing people into my life.”
Briggs then asks Morris and Hurd whether or not they might consider releasing an album together, to which Morris replies that they wrote two songs together for her new album and that he is also singing on them. “That's in our blood, that's how we met,” she says. “I don't know if we'll do a duets album at some point, but never say never. We love writing and being creative together.”
The conversation also touches on the evening’s honoree Dolly Parton, as Morris is asked how the musical icon has inspired her.
“People sometimes forget she's written the most iconic, beautiful songs in the American songbook catalog,” Morris says. “I just love her to death… and I'm so excited to perform with her on Sunday [at the Grammys].”
Speaking of rehearsing with Parton for the Grammys performance, Morris says that the experience has been “very surreal,” adding that Dolly is so easy to work with. “She's such a pro, she's been doing this forever, it's in her blood,” Morris explains. “I loved meeting her for the first time because it just exceeded all my expectations… and she's just such a little, sweet spitfire.”
