Kacey Musgraves Talks Album of the Year Win at CMA Awards, Touring With Harry Styles: Watch

Kacey Musgraves stopped to chat up with Billboard’s Taylor Weatherby backstage at the 2018 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 14), talking about her Album of the Year win, touring with Harry Styles, and much more.

CMA Awards day happened to coincide  with the 10-year anniversary of Musgraves moving to Nashville. Asked how it feels to win the prize on such a memorable date, Musgraves says that it’s “wild” and a “trippy nod from the universe,” adding that because the album was so personal to her and because she tried something a little different with it, it means a lot to have the modern country music community acknowledge her record.

Asked if she was thinking about the anniversary when she was accepting her award, Musgraves tells Billboard, “Definitely. I was just like, 'man, a decade has gone by. I'm now 30, I'm married, I never thought that that would even happen, there's all these wonderful people in my life, and all these songs'… It's about the songs. That's what drove me to Nashville, is wanting to be a part of the songwriting community here, and they showed me the ropes, and I learned a lot from them, and I would have nothing without the songs.”

Musgraves also described touring with Harry Styles, noting that she had an amazing time with him on the road. “We all became good friends with he and his crew, and they were really classy to us,” she says. “And I just love any time that two different sides of music can come together. Not that we're like wildly different, I think where his new record went and where my new record went, we kind of ended up meeting somewhere like musically in the middle, and I think a lot of people at first were kind of like this pairing doesn't really make that much sense, but that's what's fun about music.”

“At the end of the day, people are there just to hear songs,” she continues. “Good songs translate and transcend genres, so I really loved getting to see him do his thing every night, and of course, outfit envy all the time, with those rhinestones and those flares and stuff!”
