Michael Ray Talks Admiration for Post Malone at the 2018 CMA Awards: Watch

Michael Ray spoke with Billboard’s Taylor Weatherby at the 2018 CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov. 14), chatting about why he decided to cover Post Malone’s “Psycho” and why he has so much respect for him.

Ray reveals that when Spotify approached him to record a song for their Singles Sessions, he decided that he wanted to do something a little outside of the box.

“I’ve been a big fan of Post Malone, ever since ‘White Iverson,’” Ray tells Billboard, adding that he loved Malone’s approach to music. After attending one of his concerts, Ray hung out with Malone and they ended up having some deep conversations about traditional country music.

“Everybody who knows me knows I love traditional country music,” Ray explains. “We had some deep conversations of some old country songs. And so then it came up to do the Spotify Singles Session and I said, 'Well, if we’re gonna do this, let’s step out, way far out.' Let’s do something no one’s gonna think Michael Ray’s gonna do. And I told my team this might be crazy, 'Y’all might think I’m stupid, but hear me out on this.'”

“His knowledge of country music…and music in general is impressive,” he continues. “If you listen to some of his lyrics, it’s a story, there’s passion there and that’s a country song.”

In the video, which you can watch in full above, Michael Ray opens up about his relationship with Carly Pearce and much more.
