Devin Dawson Gushes Over Kehlani, Reveals the Most Ridiculous Lyric He's Written & More: Watch

Country fans fell in love with Devin Dawson's clever songwriting last year with his endearingly catchy breakout single "All On Me" and proved that there's so much more to love with his debut album Dark Horse, which the 29-year-old singer released in January. A longtime songwriter, Dawson has plenty of crafty lines in his catalog -- but some of them can get so crafty, they get a little ridiculous.

The rising country star shared one of his most outlandish lyrics he's ever written, which was for a song called "Bitter Sweet" that he wrote with his brother, Jacob, and fellow rising singer/songwriter Josie Dunne. "The first couple lines of the chorus are, 'Let's sprinkle sugar in our coffee cups 'cause we deserve to start a brand-new day/ Let's stir some milk into this chocolate and we can bake ourselves a breakup cake," he shares. "When it first came out of my mouth, I was like, 'I know this is weird, but I feel like it's going to end up being our favorite line.' And after the whole thing was done, it kind of ended up being the one that stuck out."

Dawson's keen sense for songwriting helps him pinpoint a great artist when he hears a song, and one of those artists is Kehlani. When asked to sing a song he can't get out of his head, Dawson was quick to shout out Kehlani's "Honey." After singing a line from the track, he couldn't help gushing over Kehlani's magic: "She's just got this insane voice and incredible lyrics."

Like Kehlani, Dawson is still a relatively new artist in his genre, but he already has an aesthetic about him thanks to his tattooed arms and all-black wardrobe. He told Billboard about his most interesting tattoo as well as giving fans advice for the coolest way to wear black, all of which you can hear in the video above.

Dawson will join country music's biggest names and other rising stars at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday. Be sure to tune into CBS at 8 p.m. ET to catch all the country action at the ACM Awards, which will broadcast live from Las Vegas.
