Scotty McCreery on His Next Album & Advice to 'American Idol' Reboot Contestants

Last night (Nov. 8) on the CMAs red carpet, Scotty McCreery stopped to chat with Billboard about his big news. The 24-year-old country singer recently got engaged to high school sweetheart Gabi Dugal, but he’s also celebrating signing to label Triple Tigers Records, an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment.

McCreery, who hasn’t released an album since 2013’s See You Tonight, shared that he’ll be releasing a new album in spring next year. “The album is finished. It’s all done and I can’t wait. I wrote everything on it, so I can’t wait for the fans to hear,” says McCreery.

His two previous original LPs both topped Billboard's Country Albums chart, and for this one, McCreery feels confident it could happen again, joking that it’s a tradition he’d “like to keep going.”

What makes this upcoming record special to him in contrast with his previous efforts is his newfound freedom. “This has been a breath of fresh air for me," says McCreery. "I got a lot of love for my folks at my last label [Interscope] but this is just…I feel free to be myself and kind of write more music and I’m having a good time doing it. I feel like I haven’t written any better songs in my life than I’m doing right now."

Six years ago, McCreery began his road to stardom competing on American Idol’s 10th season, becoming one of the few to thrive years after his stint on the reality show. The American Idol alum has words of advice for the new batch of contestants on the reboot: “Take a deep breath. It’s going to be a crazy ride but just have fun, find what makes you unique, and then kind of showcase that.”
