Avriel & The Sequoias "Hey Ya!"

In a new cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya!," Avi Kaplan and his post-Pentatonix project Avriel & the Sequoias replace the signature upbeat rhythm of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash with a slower country motif. The backdrop of the video is open countryside instead of a cramped concert venue. The 2003 hit took its inspiration from funk, rap and rock music, whereas the cover is folky.

The two tracks couldn't be more different, yet each is equally compelling.

A fan pointed out in the YouTube comments that "you can literally hear Avi smiling as he sings." Kaplan announced in May that he was taking a break from Pentatonix to pursue a solo career under the name Avriel & the Sequoias (the latter part of the name honoring his California birthplace).
