Martina McBride returns to the mainstream country fold with “Reckless,” her new single, which was released on Friday. After a successful detour with her pop covers album Everlasting, the new release marks her first radio single since 2012’s “Marry Me,” a collaboration with Train’s Pat Monahan.

“It is really different,” the four-time CMA female vocalist of the year tells Billboard about "Reckless." “I think it has a really fresh sound. Vocally, I feel that it’s very reminiscent of things I’ve done in the past.” Listen to it below.

And though McBride -- who's the married mom of three daughters -- isn't exactly the poster child for being reckless, she reasons that the song does resonate for her.

“Well, there are all kinds of ‘reckless,'” the singer explains. “Probably the time when I was the most reckless was when I was 19 or 20 years old, and singing in clubs until all hours of the morning, trying to get my career started. Luckily, that was when I met [sound engineer husband] John and got things together. But, I think it can mean a lot of things -- from moving across the country for a new job or loving someone. I think we all have reckless points in our lives, for sure.”

“Reckless” is the debut release on Nash Icon for McBride. However, it’s not her first time working with Scott Borchetta: Eleven, her most recent country disc, was released by Republic Nashville in the fall of 2011. “I love working with Scott and all the people at Big Machine. They are such a talented team. We had the best time working on Eleven. When we parted, we said that if we had the right project, we’d definitely work together again," says McBride. "It was the perfect fit for me -- being on the label with Reba, Ronnie Dunn, and Hank Williams, Jr. -- all artists I look up to, It seemed like a great and an exciting idea and model for a label. I’m just ecstatic to get to work together again. We’re having a blast in setting up this record.”

The single was written by Zach Crowell, Heather Morgan and Sarah Buxton with Nathan Chapman and Dann Huff handling the production duties, about whom McBride says "have so much talent, and we’ve had so much fun in the studio. It’s been an awesome experience.”

The trio are also putting the finishing touches on the new album, set for release later this year. The creative process is something that the country star says she loves now as much as she did 20 years ago -- and some of the music on the new album might have a familiar feel.

“We’re going to start mixing this week. We’re done recording, just working on vocals and overdubs. ‘Reckless’ is probably the most different-sounding thing on the record. What I love about this album is that it reminds me of Evolution (1997) in that there are a lot of different styles and sounds," McBride says. "There’s some things that are a little more country, and then some that are country-pop. It just feels really good. I’ve found ten amazing songs, and it’s just an exciting time. I can’t wait for people to hear it.”
