Richie Hawtin's CNTRL Campus Tour Returns for Spring, to Feature Grimes, Matthew Dear

Three years after inviting a new generation of US dance fans to go "Beyond EDM," Richie Hawtin will resurrect his CNTRL college campus tour this April.

Set to hit eight markets, CNTRL's second edition will mirror the first's approach in pairing daytime lectures on the intersection of music with technology and nighttime performances at music venues. In 2012, its successful previous iteration encompassed 17 dates across the United State and Canada, as well as an event at SXSW.

In addition to Hawtin, participating artists will include Blue Hawaii, Chris Liebing, Dantiez Saunderson, Dubfire, Ean Golden, Francois Kevorkian, Grimes, Justin James, Lee K, Marc Houle, Matador, Mateo Murphy, Matrixxman, Matthew Dear, and Victor Calderone. Artist lineups will vary by date.

Man vs. Machine: Richie Hawtin on the Return of Plastikman

"I hope that people walk away from the CNTRL tour with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the individual creativity that each artist & performer puts into their own shows," says Hawtin. "We hope that some of the participants and fans will be inspired to take their next steps at trying their hands at their own creativity."

Suppporting the tour's announced theme, "Individuality & Creativity In Technology-Based," each date will feature an hour-long masterclass produced and hosted by Point Blank Music School. Additional participating technology companies will include AIAIAI, Beatport, DJ Techtools, Funktion One, Little Bits, Livid, Pioneer, Roland, Splice, Subpac, and Traktor (Native Instruments).

EDM's Mainstream vs. The Underground: Time to End the Hate (Op-Ed)

"Richie Hawtin has been a pioneer in using technology not only to create music, but to reach out to audiences and shape the tools used by other musicians," says Michael Bierylo, Chair, Electronic Production and Design, Berklee College of Music. "CNTRL has been a great way for our students to learn directly from working professionals at the top of their game, and it's been a natural extension of their classroom studies."
