Exclusive Premiere: Joris Voorn Reveals Haunting Remix of Röyksopp's 'I Had This Thing'
The architect of last year’s best dance/electronic album returns to work.
Coming off Nobody Knows - which Billboard named the best dance/electronic album of 2014 – Joris Voorn could have been forgiven for taking some time off. Instead, the Amsterdam native has delivered one of his most mesmerizing remixes to date.
The Dutch artist's atmospheric take commences with sparse percussion and the distant drone of eerily filtered synthesizers. Built on a bass line that ebbs and flows beneath ever-shifting pads, his production style perfectly matches the song's lyrical themes of loss and impermanence. The remix ends much like it starts, juxtaposing Jamie Irrepressible's warped laments with foreboding minimal beats.
Voorn's melancholy remix won't see release until next week, but you can listen to the full premiere exclusively on Billboard.
Voorn describes Röyksopp's original as a "borderline EDM track" whose melodies and vocals appealed to him. The producer set about balancing the elements that inspired him with new percussion to create a "deep and almost haunting tension."
"The remix leans heavily on the melodies," says Voorn. "But in combination with the dry kick, crispy hi-hats and minimal percussion, it creates a killer dance floor magic moment."
Joris Voorn's remix of "I Had This Thing" will be available through his own Green imprint on March 9.
