CODE First Play: The Chainsmokers, '#SELFIE (Botnek Remix)'

Remixing a chart-topping viral hit like “#SELFIE” is a tough undertaking.

Canadian duo Botnek knew they had to come up with a clever twist as soon as The Chainsmokers approached them to reinterpret the No. 1 Dance/Electronic track.

“The first thing that came to mind was making a really functional Botnek-style club track,” says Botnek. “But more importantly, it was time for this selfie girl to ‘shut the fuck up.’ We had a lot of fun remixing this track, putting our characteristic sound on the track and making our playful response to the original.”

Botnek’s scathing rework has already garnered main stage support from the likes of David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Zedd. Listen to the full premiere of the track exclusively on Billboard CODE:

The original’s architects were more than happy to see the single’s narcissistic female character get shut down.

"While “#SELFIE” was blowing up we predicted that eventually it would become one of the most annoying songs ever and, with that in mind, we thought about potential artists to remix it,” say The Chainsmokers. “Botnek was at the top of that list. The guys are fantastic producers with their unique sound and we knew they would have a clever way to reinvent the song, which is what it really needed. Beyond the great production on it, their simple yet perfect twist gives the song new life, while staying true to the familiarity of the track and playing up the nuances of the song itself."

Botnek’s remix of “#SELFIE” will be available through Dim Mak/Republic Records on June 17th.
