“To be honest, I had big expectations with Ocean,” Karol G tells Billboard. “It was an album in which I focused more on the personal side rather than fit commercially. I set aside the urban act and simply made versatile music with a variety of instruments such as piano, guitar and reggae elements. There is a bit of everything and shows who Carolina truly is.” (Karol G's real name is Carolina Navarro.)
“It was incredible to see how the audience perceived me and how they enjoyed getting to know me, my soul, my heart,” she adds. “To see that my album debuted at No. 2 shows me that people still long for more organic love. I’m extremely happy and definitely want to shoot for No. 1, so there’s still lots to do.”
The 16-track album was released May 3 via Universal Music Latino/UMLE, Karol G’s second album released under the label following her debut album Unstoppable, which also premiered at No. 2 on the list dated Nov. 18, 2017, earning 4,000 units in its first week. After 80 weeks on the Top Latin Albums chart, the album ranks at No. 46 on the latest chart.
Of Ocean’s opening week sum, 2,000 were in traditional album sales, while the bulk of its units were driven largely by streaming activity. It logged 9,000 in streaming equivalent album units (SEA), which translates into 10.9 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s songs in its opening week.
The Colombian’s second top 5 debut marks the highest charting album for a female act in 2019-- and the highest charting in more than a year. Earlier in 2019, Natti Natasha’s illumiNatti debuted and peaked at No. 3 (March 2), while the last album by a woman to rank higher was Shakira's El Dorado, when it was at No. 2 on the Feb. 24, 2018-dated list.
Ocean yielded six singles on the Hot Latin Songs chart, two of which hit top 10: “Mi Cama” with J Balvin, featuring Nicky Jam (No. 6; Aug. 25, 2018) and “Culpables” with Anuel AA (No. 8; Jan. 19).
As Ocean arrives, two of its songs debut on the Hot Latin Songs chart: the album’s track title at No. 31 and “Dices Que Te Vas” with Anuel AA at No. 47. In total, Karol has four titles on the latest Hot Latin Songs chart, as “Secreto” with Anuel remains at No. 6 for a second week, and the album’s fifth studio album “Punto G,” sptints 50-30.
Concurrently, Ocean bows at No. 2 on the Latin Rhythm Albums chart, her second top 5 debut on the tally, following Unstoppable.
Mau & Ricky Arrive: Elsewhere on the Latin albums charts, brothers Mau y Ricky earn their first top 10 on the Latin Pop Albums list as Para Aventuras y Curiosidades arrives at No. 5.
The Venezuelan brothers’ album debut, released May 3 via Sony Music Latin, earned 2,000 equivalent album units, with nearly all of that sum derived from streaming activity.
Out of the 12-track effort, three songs claimed a spot on the Latin Airplay chart, including the No. 1 “Ya No Tiene Novio” with Sebastian Yatra, which topped the list on the Dec. 12-dated tally.
