Plus: Sara Bareilles’ “Amidst the Chaos” could debut in the top 10.

Khalid is on course for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as industry forecasters expect his new release, Free Spirit, to bow atop next week’s tally. Sources suggest the album could launch with perhaps 200,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 11. The effort was issued on April 5 via Right Hand/RCA Records.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the April 20-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Free Spirit may debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 14.

Free Spirit is Khalid’s third release, following his debut effort American Teen, and Suncity. The former climbed to a peak of No. 4 back in September of 2017, while Suncity debuted and peaked at No. 8 in November of 2018. Both albums have remained on the chart since their respective releases, with American Teen racking up 109 consecutive weeks on the tally thus far. Through April 4, American Teen has earned 2.45 million equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music. Its songs have rung up 2.9 billion on-demand audio streams. Meanwhile, Suncity is no slouch, with 450,000 units earned and 548 million on-demand audio streams registered for its songs.

Concurrent with the success of Khalid’s two earlier albums, he has also notched 20 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, including a trio of top 10s: as a featured artist on Logic’s “1-800-273-8255,” “Love Lies,” with Normani, and “Eastside,” with Benny Blanco and Halsey.

Elsewhere in next week’s Billboard 200 top 10, watch for singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles to possibly debut in the region with her new effort Amidst the Chaos. The album could earn around 30,000 to 35,000 units for the week.
