Death Cab for Cutie's 'Northern Lights' Shines at No. 1 on Adult Alternative Songs Chart

Death Cab for Cutie notches its sixth No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart, as "Northern Lights" ascends 3-1 on the Feb. 9-dated tally.

The song is the second No. 1 on the chart from Death Cab's 2018 album Thank You for Today. Lead single "Gold Rush" led for eight weeks beginning in July. The group's other Adult Alternative Songs No. 1s: "Black Sun" (two weeks, 2015), "You Are a Tourist" (eight, 2011), "I Will Possess Your Heart" (five, 2008) and "Soul Meets Body" (10, 2005-06).

The band ties John Mayer for the eighth-most No. 1s in the chart's 23-year history.

Plus, Death Cab has now spent 34 weeks at No. 1 on Adult Alternative Songs, fifth-best all-time, behind U2 (70), Coldplay (67), Jack Johnson (60) and Dave Matthews/DMB (51).

"Lights" holds at its No. 17 high on Alternative Songs, up 10 percent in plays, according to Nielsen Music, and reaches a new best of No. 12 on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart (4.4 million audience impressions, up 5 percent).

Thank You for Today, Death Cab for Cutie's ninth studio album, debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums chart (Sept. 1, 2018) with 27,000 equivalent album units earned.
