The song succeeds its own follow-up, "Speechless," at the summit.

Dan + Shay, the duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, bank their second No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, as "Tequila" lifts 2-1 on the list dated Feb. 2, completing a record 54-week trip to the top. The pinnacle was reached after an unprecedented 19-week wait at No. 2.

Dan + Shay dethrone themselves atop Hot Country Songs, as their follow-up single "Speechless" dips to No. 2 after nine weeks at No. 1. The duo is the first act to replace itself at the chart's summit since April 26, 2014, when Luke Bryan's "Play It Again" supplanted Florida Georgia Line's "This Is How We Roll," featuring Bryan.

How did a predecessor single hit No. 1 after its follow-up? Essentially, "Tequila" is benefiting from pop radio crossover play, as "Speechless," so far largely a country-only hit, begins to decrease in impact.

"Tequila," which led the Country Airplay chart for two weeks last July, ranks at No. 3 on Country Streaming Songs (9.8 million U.S. streams, down 10 percent, according to Nielsen Music) and No. 6 on Country Digital Song Sales (6,000 sold, down 22 percent). As for its crossover radio success, it ranks at No. 12 on Adult Pop Songs, No. 20 on Adult Contemporary and No. 24 on Pop Songs. ("Speechless," meanwhile, appears close to debuting on Adult Pop Songs.)

The 54-week odyssey to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for "Tequila" tops the 51-week climb for Chris Young's "Voices" (over two release cycles, in 2008 and again in 2010-11). Plus, Dan + Shay hold the top two spots on Hot Country Songs for a seventh week, the second-best such run in the chart's 60-year history; Bryan controlled the top two simultaneously for nine weeks in 2014.

Both "Speechless" and "Tequila" are from Dan + Shay's self-titled third LP, which debuted as the pair's second No. 1 on Top Country Albums last July. The set's next single, "All to Myself," goes to country radio Feb. 11.
