The Year in Touring Charts 2018: Biggest Concerts in the U.S., State by State

Here are this year's highest-grossing concert engagements, state by state.

We’ve already reviewed the top grossing tours, venues, and promoters of 2018. But here, we take a deeper look with a regional breakdown of Billboard Boxscore’s top headliners. See below for our interactive map to find a state-by-state review of the top touring acts of the year.

STATE BY STATE: Use our interactive map here. Click on the music note in each state (plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) to view details on that state’s top-grossing engagement of 2018. The map uses data for the 2018 year-end Billboard Boxscore charts (performances that played between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2018). Multi-artist festivals and bulk-date residencies are excluded.

TAYLOR SWIFT DOMINATES: We previously reported that Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour became the highest-grossing U.S. tour of all time, and her sprawling domination shows on the map. Swift wins 18 of 52 competitions, including California, Texas, and her home state of Pennsylvania.

Coincidentally, stadium country superstar Luke Bryan wins two states, both outside of mainland USA. He triumphs in Alaska and Hawaii, but with a small caveat. There were no show reports in the state of Alaska in the 2018 tracking year, allowing Bryan’s Aug. 1-2, 2017 engagement at Anchorage’s George M. Sullivan Sports Arena to take the cake.

18 states: Taylor Swift

4: Eagles; P!nk

2: Beyoncé & JAY-Z; Dave Matthews Band; Foo Fighters; Journey & Def Leppard; Justin Timberlake; Luke Bryan

POP TAKES CONTROL: After classic rock dominated 2017 via U2, Guns N' Roses, Depeche Mode, and The Rolling Stones, pop took control of 2018. Led by Swift’s stadium ubiquity, pop acts take 28 victories. Following Swift and P!nk, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, and the year’s top global earner, Ed Sheeran, pitch in.

28 states: Pop

12: Rock

7: Country

3: R&B/Hip-Hop

1: Comedy; Latin

WOMEN RULE: The same turning of the guard from 2017’s classic rock to 2018’s contemporary pop is marked by female acts taking back the stage. While no woman placed among 2017’s top 10 tours, three female acts crash 2018’s top five. And geographically, they are dominant: Taylor Swift, P!nk and Lady Gaga combine to top the lists of 23 states.

23 states: Solo Women

14: Solo Men

10: Duos & Groups

5: Co-Headline Tours

BY PROMOTER: Yet again, Swift makes all the difference. Live Nation emerged as 2018’s Top Promoter, with grosses of $3.7 billion but based on the electoral college, they are narrowly eclipsed by Messina Touring Group/AEG Presents. Louis Messina & Co. won 22 states, thanks to Swift, Sheeran, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, and the continued success of Tim McGraw & Faith Hill. They narrowly eclipse Live Nation’s 21, who are backed by a more diverse group of artists, including Pearl Jam, Drake, and Foo Fighters.

22 states: Messina Touring Group/AEG Presents

21: Live Nation

2: Emporium Presents
