American Music Awards Push 135% Sales Gain for Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Post Malone & More

The 2018 American Music Awards spurred a significant overnight sales gain for songs performed on the show, according to initial sales reports to Nielsen Music.

On Oct. 9, the day of the three-hour live broadcast on ABC, the collected songs performed onstage garnered a 135 percent sales gain, selling a combined 20,000 downloads -- up from 8,000 on Oct. 8. (Those figures include Aretha Franklin’s versions of songs performed in her tribute medley, and both Panic! at the Disco and Queen’s takes on “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but exclude newly released tracks.)

Notably, any gains registered for the songs on Oct. 9 likely came in just a few hours of time -- as the American Music Awards aired live at 5 pm PT and 8 pm ET.

Among the songs performed on the show: Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” (up 183 percent), Post Malone’s “Psycho” (up 150 percent), Shawn Mendes’ “Lost in Japan” (up 397 percent), Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin’s “I Like It” (up 43 percent) and Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid’s “Eastside” (up 143 percent).

Taylor Swift, who opened the show with a performance of “I Did Something Bad” and won four awards -- including the top trophy of the evening, Artist of the Year, notched a 35 percent sales gain for her catalog of songs (rising to almost 4,000; up from nearly 3,000). A sizable chunk of that increase is owed to “I Did Something Bad,” went grew from negligible sales on Oct. 8 to a little under 1,000 downloads sold (up 1,127 percent).
