Bradley Cooper Scores First Billboard Hot 100 Hit With Lady Gaga Duet 'Shallow' From 'A Star Is Born'
The ballad launches at No. 28.
After the actor made his first Billboard chart visit last week, the song debuts on the Hot 100 following its first full week of tracking. It bows with 8.3 million U.S. streams and 58,000 downloads sold in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music, as it jumps from No. 14 to No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart (marking Gaga's sixth leader on the list).
While the track scores Cooper his first Hot 100 entry, Gaga earns her 21st top 40 hit (among 27 total entries).
The duet is "definitely an event record," says Nikki Chuminatto, music director at WTMX Chicago, which played it 31 times last week.
"Shallow" is the focus track from A Star Is Born, which premiered in theaters on Friday, the same day that its soundtrack was released. The song was co-written by Gaga, Mark Ronson, former Dirty Pretty Things vocalist Anthony Rossomando and Miike Snow vocalist Andrew Wyatt.
The A Star Is Born soundtrack features four other Gaga/Cooper duets, along with five solo Cooper cuts and eight songs solely by Gaga. Writing credits on the set include Jason Isbell, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Lukas Nelson and Natalie Hemby.
Cooper makes his directorial debut with A Star Is Born and co-produced and co-wrote the screenplay for the film. He portrays musician Jackson Maine, who discovers Gaga's character Ally, in the latest remake of the original 1937 movie starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The film was adapted into a musical in 1954 starring Judy Garland and remade as a musical in 1976 starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
As previously reported, Maroon 5's "Girls Like You," featuring Cardi B, leads the Hot 100 for a third week and Lil Wayne becomes the first artist to debut two songs in the top five simultaneously.
