Imagine Dragons' 'Natural' Marks Band's Fourth Straight Alternative Songs Chart No. 1
Now with five total toppers, the band equals Nine Inch Nails' streak & trails only Linkin Park's record run of six in a row.
Imagine Dragons top Billboard's Alternative Songs airplay chart for a fourth straight time with "Natural," which rises 2-1 on the Sept. 8-dated list. The song, a standalone single recorded for ESPN's college football TV coverage for the 2018-19 season, is IG's fifth No. 1 on the list, dating back to the Las Vegas rockers' first chart-topper, "Radioactive," in 2013.
With the coronation of "Natural," Imagine Dragons' four most recent Alternative Songs entries have topped the tally. The streak began with lead Evolve single "Believer," which ruled for 13 weeks beginning in April 2017. "Thunder" (November 2017) and "Whatever It Takes" (March 2018), both three-week No. 1s, followed.
Only two other acts have either equaled or bettered Imagine Dragons' hot streak. Nine Inch Nails also scored four Alternative Songs No. 1s in a row, in 2005-07 with "The Hand That Feeds," "Only," "Every Day Is Exactly the Same" and "Survivalism." Those four leaders mark the entirety of the band's Alternative Songs No. 1s.
Meanwhile, six of Linkin Park's 11 Alternative Songs No. 1s reigned consecutively in 2003-07 when the then-six-piece could not lose, reaching the top of the list with "Somewhere I Belong," "Faint," "Numb," "Lying From You," "Breaking the Habit" and "What I've Done."
"Natural" concurrently rules the all-rock format Rock Airplay chart for a second week, earning 10.6 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. It also ascends 32-26 on Mainstream Rock Songs and 31-27 on Adult Alternative Songs. Beyond rock radio, the track pushes 12-11 on Adult Pop Songs and 29-25 on Pop Songs. On the all-genre Radio Songs chart, the song climbs 36-31 (35.2 million in audience, up 11 percent).
In addition to its airplay success, "Natural" debuts at No. 40 on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart with 11.7 million streams, a 37 percent boost, in the week ending Aug. 30, following the Aug. 24 debut of its official music video. It's also the Billboard Hot 100's greatest gainer in digital sales, helping it jump 29-24 for a new high, surging by 28 percent to 26,000 downloads sold.
