Toni Braxton's 'Long as I Live' Hits No. 1 on Adult R&B Songs
Toni Braxton achieves her eighth career No. 1 on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart as “Long as I Live” ascends from the runner-up position. The tune, which tops the chart dated June 9, climbs with an 8 percent boost in plays in the week ending June 3, according to Nielsen Music.
Braxton’s eight chart-toppers also breaks a tie with Maxwell and R. Kelly to give her sole possession of the second-most No. 1s in the chart's 24-year history. She now trails only Alicia Keys, who has 10 leaders on her résumé.
“Live” marks Braxton’s first visit to the summit in nearly four-and-a-half years. She last topped the list with “Hurt You,” a duet with Babyface that led for four weeks in December 2013-January 2014.
Here’s Braxton’s complete collection of No. 1s on Adult R&B Songs:
Song, Artist (if any besides Braxton), Weeks at No. 1, Date Reached
“Long As I Live,” one week to date, June 9, 2018
“Hurt You,” with Babyface, four weeks, Dec. 14, 2013
“Just Be a Man About It,” two weeks, Sept. 9, 2000
“You’re Makin’ Me High/Let It Flow,” 13 weeks, June 22, 1996
“You Mean the World to Me,” seven weeks, May 7, 1994
“Seven Whole Days,” six weeks, Feb. 5, 1994
“Breathe Again,” two weeks, Nov. 20, 1993
“Another Sad Love Song,” four weeks, Sept. 18, 1993
Notably, “Another Sad Love Song” was the first-ever No. 1 on Adult R&B Songs. Upon the chart’s creation, dated Sept. 18, 1993, “Song” topped the ranking for the first four weeks of its existence. (Thus, Braxton also reclaims the record for the longest span between No. 1 hits on the chart: 24 years, 8 months and 22 days.)
High Five: Braxton’s new success also heads a top five that consists entirely of former No. 1s on Adult R&B Songs. “Live” evicts Ne-Yo’s “Good Man” from the penthouse after a three-week reign. Nos. 3-5 are, respectively, Tank’s “When We,” a former 11-week champ; Bruno Mars and Cardi B’s “Finesse,” a three-week victor; and Daniel Caesar’s “Get You,” featuring Kali Uchis, which led for one week.
The last time five songs that had already logged time in the top slot ranked from Nos. 1-5 was on the chart dated Feb. 3, 2018. That week, “Get You,” arrived in the penthouse, followed directly by SZA’s “Love Galore,” featuring Travis Scott; Khalid’s “Location”; “When We”; and Mars’ “That’s What I Like.”
Tamia Hits the Top 10: Tamia returns to the Adult R&B Songs top 10 for the first time since 2012 as “Leave It Smokin’” rises 11-10. The track lifts with an 8 percent jump in plays in the week.
Tamia last reached the region with “Beautiful Surprise” in 2012, which climbed to No. 4. In total, the singer boasts 12 top 10 hits on Adult R&B Songs, including three No. 1 hits: A collaboration with Eric Benet, “Spend My Life With You,” which reigned for five weeks in 1999; “Stranger in My House,” a four-week champ in 2001; and “Officially Missing You,” which led for two weeks in 2003.
“Smokin’” previews her Passion Like Fire album, expected later this year. Her last studio set, 2015's Love Life, opened at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart.
